Necromancer Audio · Mbox 2 driver

A new macOS audio driver for the original Digidesign Mbox 2. Bringing a useful old recording interface back to the studio.

Keep a classic interface in use.

The starting point

A useful recording interface can outlast its original driver. The original Mbox 2 needs a new transport and CoreAudio bridge to work with modern Apple silicon Macs.

What I built

Necromancer Audio is an independent, MIT-licensed macOS driver for the original Digidesign/Avid Mbox 2 USB. It connects a native user-space USB transport to CoreAudio, carrying stereo 24-bit audio at 48 kHz without a kernel extension or changes to SIP or boot security.

Playback and guitar recording through DI input 1 were heard on the earlier prototype. The public developer alpha now includes source, a Mac developer archive, checksums and installation/recovery tooling; wider acceptance of that packaged release is still in progress.

The alpha targets the original Mbox 2 USB with existing firmware 1.43 on Apple silicon. Other Mbox models and Intel Macs are outside this release. macOS 26.4+ is the intended runtime target, with 26.x compatibility still awaiting testing.

This project has no published product images yet.

The driver alpha

A new path from USB to the studio.

The public 0.1.0-alpha.1 developer release focuses on a narrow hardware profile and recoverable installation. Software checks and historical prototype listening support the project; the packaged alpha still needs broader hardware testing.

01Developer alpha

Stereo CoreAudio input & output

Fixed 48 kHz stereo audio, with 24-bit USB samples presented through standard Float32 CoreAudio. Earlier prototype playback and DI-1 guitar recording were observed on one setup.

02Developer alpha

Native user-space transport

A USB transport and CoreAudio adapter provide the audio path without loading a kernel extension or changing SIP or boot security.

Installation & recovery tools

Inspect an installation plan, then use managed update, rollback and uninstall tools with recovery material and protection for unmanaged files. The developer binaries are ad-hoc signed and unnotarized; installation is intended for developers.

04Experimental · disabled by default

Optional MIDI bridge

An optional CoreMIDI bridge is included for further testing. Physical DIN input and output have not been qualified and should not be relied on as working hardware MIDI.

Packaged-alpha installation, sustained load, reconnect, sleep/wake and broader Mac/Mbox compatibility still need testing. Input 2, phantom power and S/PDIF remain unqualified; no measured low-latency claim is made. This is an independent project, unaffiliated with Avid or Digidesign.

How it connects

From the old USB interface to a modern music app.

The driver reconnects the original Mbox 2 to the standard audio system on macOS. The experimental MIDI path is separate.

  1. 01

    Mbox 2

The original interface supplies stereo USB audio at a fixed 48 kHz.

  2. 02

    User-space driver

A USB transport converts device samples for a CoreAudio adapter, without loading a kernel extension.

  3. 03

    Music software

Apps see ordinary stereo CoreAudio input and output. Wider hardware and long-session testing continues.

The public developer alpha is narrowly scoped. Physical MIDI, input 2, phantom power and S/PDIF remain unverified.
